Okay, so I've just finished reading the Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered Guide, and honestly, I'm a little underwhelmed. Coming from the era of those amazing tips and tricks magazines – you know, the ones that held your hand through every single level, offering detailed walkthroughs and strategies – this guide feels…lacking. It's like comparing a finely detailed map to a crumpled napkin sketch.

My experience with the original Soul Reaver games goes way back to the early 2000s, and I remember poring over those old magazines, eagerly anticipating each new walkthrough. Those guides were indispensable, meticulously charting every path, every secret, every collectible. This, unfortunately, doesn't hold a candle to them. The standard just isn't there.

The biggest disappointment is the lack of detailed walkthroughs. The book promises step-by-step instructions, but what it delivers are vague suggestions that often feel like common sense. It doesn't offer any real assistance with the puzzles, which are, let's be honest, a significant part of the Soul Reaver experience. Figuring out those intricate conundrums is half the fun, and this guide fails to provide any meaningful help in that area. Similarly, finding collectibles feels like a completely solo endeavor, as the guide offers little to no guidance in locating them.

The lack of visuals is another significant drawback. Zero pictures! In a game as visually rich and atmospheric as Soul Reaver, a guide without images feels incredibly incomplete. A simple screenshot showing the location of a particular item or the solution to a puzzle would have made a world of difference. Instead, the descriptions are so sparse and lacking in detail that they’re often unhelpful. I found myself constantly referring to online walkthroughs to supplement the book’s inadequate information.

The only real redeeming quality is the background information on the lore and characters. It offers a decent overview of Raziel, Kain, and the history of Nosgoth, but honestly, much of this information can be readily found online or discovered organically while playing the games themselves. This doesn't justify the price of the book.

It feels like the author focused more on writing a generalized overview rather than a practical guide. Perhaps a picture would have been worth a thousand words in this case. The absence of visuals and the lack of detailed, helpful walkthroughs severely detract from its value. To be frank, I would have been better off using online resources, which are far more comprehensive and visually informative.
